Drugs are Killers - Watch Your Children

Spring is here and it is going to be another busy month at the Elks. Doug Neiss, the current President of the Past Exalted Rulers Association, will be starting the "Passing of the Gavel" in the Oneonta Lodge on May 2nd. This is a way of getting members of the different Lodges in the district to travel around and meet the members of other Lodges.
The New York State Elks Spring Convention will be taking place at the Nevele Grande Lodge May 17th through the 20th. This event brings Elks together from throughout New York to discuss matters concerning the Elks and to Install the new State Officers for the next years term. If any members of the Lodge are interested in making a day trip to the convention, please let me know and I will try to coordinate a trip for all interested.
This month the 6th Annual Sidney Elks #2175 Golf Tournament will also be held on Saturday, May 12th and I am looking forward to seeing all the teams that have signed up at Sundown Golf Course for all the fun. We will also be hosting a Mother's Day Breakfast at the Lodge on Sunday, May 13th. This is always a lot of fun and good food for all who attend. Have a wonderful month and be sure to join us for Mother's Day Breakfast.
Fraternally, Jason Hager, ER

Ladies Auxiliary News

Will the April showers bring us May flowers? Let's hope so. As a young girl I would make a May Basket to hang on my grandfather's door, and made sure he caught me. Today's children don't seen to know about this tradition; it wa a favorite of mine to start off the spring. Something similar to this is in medieval England was to go out into the woods and gather greenery orflowers--"going a-maying"- also this was called "The Court of Love". In May of 1778 The Battle of Crooked Billet began in Hatboro, PA, 1834 the British colonies abolished slavery, and in 1863 The Battle of Chancellorsville began during the Civil War. If your birthday is this month you share it with John F. Kennedy, Harry S. Truman, and Patrick Henry. Mother's day is a great way to show all the mom's how wonderful they are. Did you know: In parts of the United States it is customary to plant tomatoes outdoors after mother's day (and not before), and was started as a crusade to found a memorial day for women. At the end of this month we will be paying tribute to those who have served this great country. As we do this, let us remember Ruth Campbell, our founding President of the Auxiliary, who served this Lodge well. To our absent sister.
The Craft Show and Bake Sale was successful, we raised enough money for a scholarship. I would like to thank everyone for his or her help. We are always in need of Bingo Kitchen workers; it is only a few hours on a Thursday night. Remember the kitchen is our main source of income.
Our next meeting will be on May 8th @ 6:30. Hope to see you there. Prayers and thoughts to those who may not be feeling so well or cannot be here with us. God bless us all.

Respectfully,
Robinanne Little
Ladies Auxiliary President

Reminder - - If you are moving South for the Winter, please turn your change of address into the Secretary.

Wing Day Success!
Wow, what a day! The Lodge opened at 2 PM to get an early start, and at 2 PM, 30 dozen wings were already on order. It was another record wing day selling 191 dozen. The crew was over a hundred dozen away from selling the "two thousand one hundred and seventy fifth" dozen (#2175) in our wing career.  Dick Palmer was the recipient of that order and received a whole chicken on a platter along with gift certificates for a Friday night dinner. Congratulations Dick!
The wing crew wants to thank all that supported us. The new fryer in the kitchen helped us keep up with the orders. It can cook ten dozen at a time. Time facts are 191 dozen were cooked in 150 minutes making it 1.27 minutes per dozen. That will make KFC turn their heads. Thanks again for the support and look forward to seeing everyone next time.

"Passing of the Gavel" A South Central District Tradition

This 50-year-old tradition, scheduled by the South Central District Past Exalted Ruler Association, is held every year in May and June. It is an inter-Lodge activity involving all 10 Lodges of our district.
A gavel is cut in half, and each half follows a schedule and travels through the District being presented at Lodge meetings, finally being rejoined at a Common Lodge. It is customary for the presenting Lodge to perform an Initiation at the Host Lodge meeting when they present the Gavel. There is usually a dinner and social hour prior to the Lodge meeting, check with the
Host Lodge for information.
The 2007 "Passing of the Gavel" Schedule is as follows:
First Half:
Oneonta - Wed., May 2 @ 7:00 Oneonta to Sidney - Wednesday, May 9 @ 8:00 Sidney to Vestal - Thursday, May 24 @ 7:30 Vestal to Homer - Thursday June 7 @ 8:00
Second Half:
Cortland - Thursday, May 10 @ 7:00 Cortland to Binghamton - Monday, May 14 @ 8:00 Binghamton to Owego - Thursday, May 17 @ 8:00 Owego to Endicott - Wednesday, June 6 @ 8:00
Halves meet at J.C. on Tuesday, June 19 @ 7:00
