A Fraternal Organization

Drugs are Killers - Watch Your Children

I had the opportunity to attend the NYS Elks Convention at the Nevele Grande Resort in Ellenville, NY on May 19th - 22nd, 2005. The opening Ceremony was rich with tradition and very inspirational. Along with seeing friends I have met within the last 2 months, I was able to meet more people from all over the state. There truly is brotherhood in this great Fraternal Organization we all call the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. I attended a couple of seminar meetings and watched the Homer Lodge compete in the Ritual of Initiation. I learned many things about or organization and am starting to see why this is a great organization to belong to as a member. The Closing Ceremony was nice as well with Tim Kelly being Installed as the State President for the year of 2005 - 2006. All of the State Vice Presidents for each district in the state were Installed as well. Locally, Sandry Carner was Installed as our new SVP for the South Central District. I wish all of the newly Installed Officers the best of luck in their upcoming year. I thank our Lodge for sending me to NYS Convention.
The following is an excerpt for a previous Exalted Ruler's Message: June is and important month for the Elks organization. It is the month that we, as Elks, celebrate the birth of the Flag of our Country. The Flag is symbol of our crowning virtue, Charity. It is an integral part of every ceremony and ritual that the Elks are involved in, and it is appropriate that the Elks play an important role in the National observance of Flag Day. In 1907 the BPO Elks Grand Lodge passed a resolution recognizing June 14th as Flag Day. The Grand lodge of our Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge in 1911.
Inspired by three decades of state and local celebration, and with prompting from the Elks, Flag Day was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30,1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's Proclamation, it was not August 3,1949 that President Harry Truman, himself a member of the Elks, signed an act of Congress designating June 14th of each year National Flag Day. Please come to our Flag Day ceremony on Sunday, June 12,2005 at 2:00 PM.

Fraternally,
Ralph Gschwind,ER

LADIES & GENTLEMEN OF SIDNEY ELKS LODGE 2175

I would like to share something with all members. It is time that we get some volunteers for our Thursday Night Bingo. At the present time we have 2 crews to work Bingo. One crew works 3 times a month and the other crew works once a month. I ask you, what is wrong with this picture? Bingo is a major source of the money that we give back to the community for various activities. Why is it that out of a Lodge of 300 plus members we only have approximately 20 people doing all of this work? It doesn't seem right to me. Volunteerism is a big part of the Brotherhood of Elks and quite frankly, WE NEED SOME MORE VOLUNTEERS. If just another 20 people would volunteer to work Bingo we could actually have set crews so that no one would have to work more than once a month. More than 20 people volunteering means crews could work less than once a month, maybe like once every 2 months. We are actively looking into the ways we do bingo - possibly making things easier & changes to get the crowd out earlier than we do now. As Bingo Chairman, I would like members to call me at 563-1589 if you are interested in working Bingo. Giving back to the community is what we are all about. When I get enough response I will schedule a meeting to set - up crews, instruct, and train how to sell & work bingo. This is very important Ladies & Gentleman - We can NOT be. True Elks without giving back to the community. So call NOW

    Thank You
    Ralph Gschwind, ER, Bingo Chairman
