Drugs are Killers - Watch Your Children

It's Fall again. The nice sunny days are few and far between. The leaves are starting to turn and fall 6ft the trees. This means it is time to get ready for winter. As Elks, it means it is time to get busy with the Fall activities.
The first weekend in October, the State President will make his visit to our District. He will be at all the Lodges in our District at different times during the weekend. Please try to make time to come and meet our State President and his wife.
We have three new candidates for proposed membership into our order. Balloting on the three new candidates will be at our October 8th meeting. Initiation for those candidates that are approved will be at our second meeting on October 22nd. Please come and support our Lodge in this process.
The Travel Dinners for our District will be at the Oneonta Lodge #1312 this month. It will be held on the 26th. Please come and support our District.
Well, that's all for this month. If anyone has anything for next month's Newsletter, please give it to me so i that I can put it in. Take care and be safe.

    APPORTION LOVE

Deception in Love. It's not what we ask for. It's life and it's ramifications.
We often feel! We can't explain what we feel, but we feel! Is it Love or is it Infatuation? Infatuation, or is it Love? Or neither, or both, or something beyond?
I want to express Love as in the New Testament as it stands, as both testaments are parallel in a way. I'll pick the New.
Jesus loved his Apostles (all male). He loved his Disciples (both male and female). They called it Agape. He was not as selective as we are today. They had the same inter-social problems as we have today, and possibly even more.
We love, and we marry. Or, we love and we don't marry. Or, we don't love and don't get married. Or, we don't love and get married. Great! We have a diversified society. Is it Love, Infatuation, Deception, or Other?
Back to deception! I'm not certain why people want to be deceptive. One would say, "I love you", bull! To daily escape from family, so-called friends or loved ones. Why can't we be honest? As a friend once said, "why can't we just all get along?". The truth? I don't even like this guy, He's not even my friend! Far from it! And he's far from being honest! I'm being deceptive for the convenience of my writing.
Have you ever told someone "I love you" and the response is "me too"? Don't you wonder why they don't say "I love you too"? It would be sincere. But I'd guess deception.
Recently I experienced the deception of Love. As E.R., I was told and treated by many with love (agape). Not by all, but by many. Soon after my year was over, I was said to be, how do I say this delicately, a noncooperative PER. To me, the love I was shown when I was in office now became a facade.
Recently a true friend deceived me. It ain't pretty when that happens. Back to feelings. Back to bad feelings. Is it Love, Infatuation, Deception or Other?
"As we therefore have opportunity, let us do good unto others, for we pass this way but once. We cannot retrace our steps nor call back the days that are gone; but the passing moment is ours long enough to grasp the hand in friendship, to lighten each others burdens, to bring rest to the weary and to comfort those who mourn... This is Brotherly Love!"

    Tom Adams, P.E.R.

    INITIATION October 22,2003

"WHY I AM PROUD TO SAY THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE"

The events of 9/11 are becoming a memory that will not be forgotten but will always be put aside as we return to the daily routine with old attitudes. The American Values, which are the basics of freedom and democracy, are left to the comments of newspaper editorials and patriotic holidays. The values, traditions and principles that unite us have again been moved down the list of priorities.
As Elks it is our duty to instill awareness of our heritage andimplement patriotic programs that will quicken the spirit of patriotism. With the fall season comes the opportunity to promote programs that will reach the youth of this nation.
The GIL Americanism Essay Contest is a program that encourages writing skills and captures the thoughts of students on "Why I Am Proud To Say The Pledge Of Allegiance", is a thought provoking exercise that cannot fail to build patriotism in young Americans.
Whether it is a parochial, private or public school, there should be a concerned educator who is willing to participate in the program and every Lodge has a member who could help make the proper contact.
Every Lodge should copy and distribute the enclosed invitational poster in the local school system and, if possible, publish it in the local newspaper and Lodge Bulletin. Communication and enthusiasm are critical to the success of this opportunity to reach the
    leaders of tomorrow.
Let us not forget our heritage, the cost of freedom and the American Principles upon which this Nation was founded. Lodge participation in GIL Americanism Programs will insure that we lead by example in preserving the Values upon which this Nation was
    founded.
    Carl J. Lino, Chairman
    GIL Americanism Committee
