It was in 1911 and the U.S. 10th Cavalry camped out in Sidney on what is now the Sidney airport. The U.S. 10th Cavalry was composed entirely of Negroes, except officers, when they were in route from Fort Allen, Vermont to Virginia in 1911. They made camp for two days on the old Sidney fairgrounds which was across from the old Sidney Airport and hangar. (Now it is the site for the Sidney Municipal Airport and At-A-Glance.
There were 10 companies in the troop. Each had its section for tents and each had their own cooking equipment. Their stoves were collapsible sheet iron with ovens. We were there while supper was being prepared. One cooking hamburg in large pans in the oven, another bacon, while biscuits were being stirred for baking.

We talked with several of the men. They all were courteous and intelligent. One of the band members was especially interesting to talk to. He gave us his pin which is a bronze lyre.
